News Olam Properties : energy saving and DPE : instructions for use

Step 1: Insulate your windows

It’s no secret that windows are one of the biggest sources of wasted energy. Poorly insulated, they dissipate all the heat. Double and triple glazing can save you up to 10% on your bill. But think about walls and roofs too.

Step 2: Warm up moderately

Did you know that if you lowered your thermostat by 1°C you could save up to 7% on your energy bill? The best thing to do in winter is to wear warm clothes and heat your home reasonably. A temperature of 19°C during the day is more than enough.

Step 3: Turn down your heating at night

A healthy habit is to turn down your heating at night. If you’re sheltered under warm blankets or a duvet, you’ll sleep much better.

Step 4: Use low-voltage bulbs

They are much more economical, consuming up to 5 times less energy than incandescent bulbs. And the light they give off is much more pleasant than that of the earlier models, which was often considered too cold.

Step 5: Avoid prolonged standby times

If you’re not using them, switch off your electrical appliances. The accumulation of appliances on standby in the home is a significant source of electricity consumption.

Step 6: Make the most of natural light

Use as much natural light as possible by placing work surfaces, reading chairs or your desk as close as possible to the windows.

Step 7: Choose a pyrolysis oven

To withstand the heat, a pyrolysis oven is always better insulated than a conventional oven. This insulation allows it to retain heat better during cooking. It’s best to start pyrolysis just after cooking to take advantage of the heat that has accumulated.

Step 8: Cover your saucepans during cooking

Put a lid on your pots and pans to limit heat loss. Don’t leave your hobs on. When cooking, switch off your hobs a few minutes before the end of the cooking time to take advantage of the accumulated heat. Hotplates consume a lot of energy.

Step 9: Defrost in the open air

Just think about it. Bringing your frozen food up to room temperature by leaving it out in the open is much cheaper than using the microwave.

Step 10: Watch out for the machines

Don’t run your washing machines half empty, or use an energy-saving programme. When it comes to drying, a line or tumble dryer is preferable to an electric tumble dryer. Laundry dries very quickly near a radiator.

Step 11: Read the energy labels

When you buy your household appliances, it’s essential to check the energy labels. They are compulsory on all domestic appliances and give you reliable information on their consumption and performance.
